Kensington House Recognised for Innovation in Aged Care
Good luck to our amazing Care Team from Remuera Gardens!
Our Group Culture, Care and Quality Manager, Reign Marcial, is heading to Christchurch today to take part in the Aged Care Association Conference — and we’re thrilled to share that Kensington House at Remuera Gardens has been named a finalist in the 2025 Excellence in Care Awards (Innovative Delivery category)!
The winners will be announced this Thursday at the NZACA Conference.
This national recognition celebrates those who are leading the way in aged care — embracing innovation, improving services, and making a real difference in residents’ lives.
Our Holistic Dance Exercise Programme has earned us this honour, and we couldn’t be prouder.
Reign Marcial is a multi-talented healthcare professional with extensive research experience in the benefits of structured exercise for cognitive function, balance, and fall prevention in older adults. We are incredibly fortunate at Real Living Group to have him on board, bringing his expertise and energy to the team.
Reign developed the Holistic Dance Exercise Programme (HDEP) as part of his Master’s in Health at Victoria University of Wellington. He designed the programme specifically for Real Living, taking on multiple roles — including cameraman and editor — to produce the instructional videos that staff and residents use to follow the exercises.
Reign explains the motivation behind his project: "I felt compelled to share this initiative after three of our residents suggested incorporating dance and physical activities during a residents’ meeting. When we discussed fall prevention, dementia intervention, and how exercise and meditation positively impact the body and may help slow cognitive decline, residents became enthusiastic and eager to participate. Recognizing this as an opportunity for continuous improvement, I introduced the concept to the staff, sharing insights from my research. The team showed great interest and even volunteered to incorporate meditation into their routine before starting their shifts."
Reign’s Holistic Dance Exercise Programme (HDEP) combines standing and seated movements with elements of tai chi, meditation, rhythm and tapping, and qigong. He has been training staff at Remuera Gardens while also filming instructional videos for residents. The programme was led by the diversional therapist, with support from the clinical coordinator and Reign.
Reign brings not only qualifications and experience to the team but also enthusiasm, positivity, and dynamic energy. Passionate about advocating for senior adults, he is dedicated to championing the Real Living Model of Care, which focuses on empowering both staff and residents to foster a thriving and supportive community.
Reign believes that HDEP has been a success:
“We harnessed the positive energy and harmony that this project generated within our team. Each caregiver was trained not only to facilitate HDEP but also to lead meditation sessions. I am confident that these efforts have enhanced their leadership skills and strengthened collaboration. Research consistently shows that structured movement and mindfulness programmes significantly improve teamwork and build stronger community connections among participants.”
At Real Living, we believe that true well-being extends beyond physical health—it is about fostering a sense of community, empowerment, and shared purpose. The Holistic Dance Exercise Programme (HDEP) embodies this philosophy, offering an engaging and evidence-based approach to improving both physical and mental well-being for our residents and staff.
