Friendship and Fine Wine: A Day at Westbrook Winery

Valentine’s Day can hold different meanings for different people, but at its core, it’s a day to celebrate love in all of its forms. Over the years, the special day has evolved from being solely reserved for couples to also being seen as an occasion to embrace self-love and self-care. The residents of Pakuranga Park firmly believe in this, and this is why they treated themselves to a wonderful day trip to Westbrook Winery, in Waimauku.

Westbrook is one of New Zealand’s oldest and most respected boutique wineries. Their skilled winemaker James Rowan combines traditional and innovative techniques to produce multi-award-winning wines including outstanding Chardonnays and Rieslings. The winery is nestled in the beautiful Ararimu Valley with the Cellar Door looking down over tree-lined grass-covered terraces and across the pretty lily pond to row after row of vines.

Nearly 40 Pakuranga Park residents attended the winery day trip, featuring a tasting of five fine wines with detailed insights from the sommelier regarding their origins, production methods, and distinctive qualities. Following the wine tasting, residents savored a delightful and relaxed lunch, exchanging updates and sharing laughter over their latest news and jokes.

The group from Pakuranga Park included a few couples, among them Dawn and Syd, celebrating their wedding anniversary. But the gathering was mostly formed by friends who enjoy each other’s company and know how to look after themselves with the best food and wine.

Dawn and Syd celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary yesterday.

This is not the first time that Pakuranga Park takes their residents to Westbrook Winery. At Real Living, residing in one of our villages comes with the added perk of weekly excursions to enchanting destinations. During the warmer months, the Village Coordinators make the most of the nice weather taking the residents to gorgeous outdoor destinations – always including a stop at nice lunching stops on the way back to the village.

At the end of the ceremony, they featured a performance by the Eno Sisters, a trio of talented singers who sing songs from the wartime era.

Lonely Miaow brought around 12 very friendly cats and kittens who loved mingling with the residents, having cuddles, and of course... getting into mischief.
