A special visit from a gardening legend
Look who popped into Remuera Gardens!
How lucky are we to have had a visit from the one and only Jack Hobbs?
A renowned horticulturist and familiar face on New Zealand television, Jack spent eight years as a presenter on Maggie’s Garden Show and many years at the helm of the Auckland Botanic Gardens. He was also appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for his services to horticulture.
Jack may be retired, but thankfully he hasn’t completely hung up his gardening gloves!
He was at Remuera Gardens ahead of a very special Garden Quiz with Peter Williams, where Peter will take on hosting duties and Jack will be our resident gardening expert.
While he was here, Jack had a good chat with one of our gardeners, Aaron — who was pretty chuffed to meet him!
At Remuera Gardens, our eight acres of established gardens are much more than a beautiful backdrop to village life. They have been growing, changing and collecting stories for nearly 40 years.
It all began when the village was first established. Many mature trees and plants were rescued from a local Remuera garden centre that was closing and, rather than seeing these established specimens disappear, they were given a new home within the village
Over the following four decades, the landscape has continued to evolve organically. Plants have been propagated here, others donated by residents, while some have arrived from rather unexpected places — including Auckland Zoo!
Today, the result is an eclectic mix of native and exotic plants from around the world, including mature trees, cottage-style planting, tropical areas, more than 150 varieties of camellias and 150 varieties of roses. And we wouldn’t want it any other way.
