Strength Without Strain

At Real Living, the health and wellbeing of our residents are a top priority. That’s why all our villages offer a variety of exercise and wellness activities, including yoga, tai chi, line and folk dancing, and now, Pilates.

Pilates is a low-impact exercise method designed to strengthen muscles, improve flexibility, and enhance overall body awareness. It’s suitable for all ages and fitness levels, but particularly beneficial for older adults looking to maintain mobility, strength, and independence.

At Pakuranga Park, Pilates has quickly become one of the most sought-after activities. Not only is the class regularly filled with eager residents, but staff members have also joined in, recognizing the benefits for posture, core stability, and mobility. The gentle, controlled movements improve circulation, boost energy levels, and support bone health—crucial for preventing osteoporosis.

Chris Bull, Welfare Coordinator and one of the staff members who joined the class, shares:
"The most inspiring people I know have discovered new passions well into their golden years—whether it’s card games, genealogy, ukulele, bowls, or Pilates. It’s amazing how these subtle movements strengthen your core, improve balance, and build confidence in daily activities. The best part? Anyone can start at any time—all you need is a floor mat and comfy pants!"

An added bonus of Pakuranga Park’s Pilates class is its instructor: Sureta, who was crowned Group Fitness Instructor of the Year (Own Choreography) at the 2024 Exercise New Zealand Awards! Known for her enthusiastic and encouraging teaching style, Sureta moves among participants, gently correcting posture and ensuring everyone gets the most out of the session.

The Monday midday class takes place in the Community Centre, one of the largest communal spaces in the village, just a few metres from the village’s beloved Bird Wall. This peaceful setting allows residents to linger afterward for a chat and a cuppa, making it a wonderful social experience as well.

Welfare Coordinator Chris Bull encourages all residents who are curious about Pilates to give it a try:
"Be kind to yourself—start slowly, stay hydrated (especially on warm days), and listen to your body. Exercise and friendship make a great pair, so never underestimate the power of reaching out to a neighbour. Sometimes, a simple hello can spark a lifelong friendship."
