Shaun Wallace will participate in next month’s Quiz

Remuera Gardens Beattie Lodge was at full capacity on Monday for the celebration of one of the village’s most popular events, the Quiz Night. Around 50 people signed up for the challenge, with many residents bringing their families to test their genius. The village has been hosting Quiz nights for a couple of years now so the residents knew they were up for a night full of challenges, good company and lots of giggles.

The Quiz Nights are so much fun that children and grandchildren always want to come.

The Quiz Night was hosted by Brendan Lochead, founder of “Believe it or Not”, a company that was established in 1998 and pioneered the Quiz industry in New Zealand. They provide the questions we see on Air New Zealand planes, the Sky TV Quiz channel and the NZ Herald newspaper.

The Quiz nights always include spot prizes for the smartest and quickest participants.

Coming to Remuera Gardens is always a special night for Brendan as his mother-in-law lives in the village, so all his family comes to see “grandma”. With the questions projected on to the big screen, Brendan runs a fast-paced Quiz divided into several categories, such as “Who am I?”, “Animals big and small” or “Art and Literature”. The categories change every time, to ensure a wide variety of subjects are covered.

Eight teams participated in Monday’s quiz including a staff team that had as much fun as the residents. One of the funniest parts of the quiz is the “Last Man Standing” competition, where all the participants have to stand up and answer Brendan’s questions by putting their hands on their heads or their “tails”, which always leads to comic scenes and lots of laughs. At the end, “The Last Man Standing” gets a special prize.

Remuera Gardens’ Quiz nights are always very exciting but next month’s one will have an added thrill. Shaun Wallace, aka The Dark Destroyer from “The Chase”, will be participating in the quiz virtually from his home in London. Around 25 retirement villages from New Zealand have been invited to this special Quiz Night and a very lucky one will win a visit from Shaun Wallace. Cross fingers that it will be Remuera Gardens!

Anzac Day commemoration

The week of Anzac Day is a very important time at Real Living, as all our villages join the nation in commemorating the service and sacrifice of New Zealand and Australian military personnel. Yesterday, Pakuranga Park celebrated a memorial gathering to remember the fallen and pay tribute to the bravery of our military members. At the end of the ceremony, they featured a performance by the Eno Sisters, a trio of talented singers who sing songs from the wartime era.

Last week, the residents of Epsom Village were treated to a visit from Lonely Miaow, a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue and care of stray and abandoned cats and kittens. Lonely Miaow brought around 12 very friendly cats and kittens who loved mingling with the residents, having cuddles, and of course... getting into mischief.
