Pets of Pakuranga
Retired horse dentist Vern Trillo moved to Pakuranga Park last year, and one of the biggest factors in his decision was the ability to bring his beloved five-year-old Labradoodle, Bella, with him. Now, he enjoys life in a beautifully designed, open-plan brick-and-tile villa, perfectly positioned to soak up the sun. His home comes with a spacious backyard—ideal for gardening and providing Bella with plenty of room to run and play.
Real Living Group’s pet policy aims to balance the rights of all residents to enjoy a peaceful environment while recognizing the deep emotional bond many have with their pets. That’s why new pets can only be brought in with the consent of Real Living management. Vern was delighted when Pakuranga Park’s Village Manager, Christian Pulley, confirmed that Bella met the village’s pet-friendly guidelines.
After working as a horse dentist for 40 years and continuing to breed racehorses, Vern has always been surrounded by animals. Being able to start this next chapter with Bella by his side has been a great comfort. "My kids are very happy with my decision—this is where I want to be. A friend of mine designed my garden, and it’s different from everyone else's. I love going out there and throwing the ball for Bella," he shares.
Bella is just one of the many adorable dogs you’ll spot while walking around the village. Pakuranga Park, set on 30 acres of stunning park-like grounds, is known for its charming streets, cosy villas, and lush greenery. Many residents say it feels like a quintessential English village. It’s not just dogs that love exploring here—the village cats have also made themselves at home.
Eleanor has lived at Pakuranga Park for thirteen years and was thrilled to bring her beloved cat, Mr Squiggles, with her when she moved in. Now thirteen years old, Squiggles remains in great health, as he proves each evening when he joins Eleanor on her daily walk.
Beyond having the opportunity to keep her pet, Eleanor loves living at Pakuranga Park because of what she describes as the care and compassion shown by the leadership team.
Pakuranga Park’s beautiful natural surroundings also make it a haven for birds—both wild and domestic. Rock pigeons, starlings, thrushes, kingfishers and fantails, frequently visit the village, filling the air with birdsong. Since the installation of a bird wall near the community center—featuring six all-weather seed feeders, two fruit feeders, two bird baths, and a variety of birdhouses and perches—birdwatching has become a favorite pastime for many residents.
But wild birds aren’t the only ones bringing joy to the village. Some residents have pet birds as well, including Mary, who lives in a serviced apartment with her delightful three-year-old budgie, Tinker. Curious and energetic, Tinker loves perching by the window, watching the sunshine bathe the croquet and bowls green below. Occasionally, Mary lets him out of his cage for a little flight around the apartment, and his favorite activity is perching gently on her fingers.
At Real Living, we understand just how important pets are to our residents. That’s why, in 2022, we hosted an exciting Pet Competition, celebrating our residents’ beloved animal companions through heartwarming photos. Scroll down to see the Finalists if you're keen on some adorable cuteness!
