Sharing Matariki with the local community

Matariki is a special occasion in the New Zealand calendar which marks the start of the Māori New Year. There are many ways to celebrate this holiday, Real Living residents have chosen to spend as much time as possible with family and friends around the community.

Pakuranga Park Village was treated to a Matariki Extravaganza on Friday the 17th of June. The morning started with the charming performance of a bell-ringers group that includes some residents at the village.

The sweet music coming from the bells was the best way to awaken the senses in preparation for the Matariki performances.

The village Lounge was full, with all the residents looking forward to the visit of two of the local schools, St Mark’s Catholic school and Pakuranga College. The Kapa Haka groups of both schools showcased their extraordinary talent and had the residents in awe during all their performances.

The junior students at St Mark's Catholic school performed some Maori songs that delighted all the residents.

Pakuranga Park Village has strong ties with the local community and both the residents and the students thoroughly enjoyed celebrating Matariki together. This special holiday has been growing over the last few years and Real Living residents are embracing it with all their hearts. At the end of the Matariki Extravaganza the village’s Choir did a very impressive rendition of Tūtira mai ngā iwi.

Mahi pai, good work!
