Pet Vibes: A Heartwarming Visit to Pakuranga Park

No two days are the same at Real Living, as we aim to provide our residents with enriching experiences and meaningful interactions. The company Pet Vibes has been part of Pakuranga Park's monthly scheduled events for three years now, visiting every third Sunday of the month. The owners, Joanne and Clifford, bring a diverse group of animals, including rabbits, guinea pigs, cats, dogs, and even a rooster and a duck!

During the hour-long visit to the village, our residents are welcomed to pet and interact with the animals. Many of them enjoy snuggling up in laps, particularly the guinea pigs and the cat. Others prefer to explore their surroundings; the canary delights in fluttering around the room, while the cockatiels take a keen interest in earrings (and one might say, are trying to steal them!).

Research shows that pet therapy offers a multitude of benefits, encompassing both emotional and physical well-being. Participating in one of Pet Vibes' sessions shows us that it's also a lot of fun, as the interaction between animals and people, as well as among the animals themselves, can create many entertaining and heartening experiences. The residents were very happy to capture this great photo opportunity of a tender moment between the sheep and the duck.

Joanne and Clifford have years of experience in animal handling, regularly visiting early childhood centers, private homes, expos, and retirement villages. Clifford initially had a huge phobia of birds. However, after facing his fears, he's now comfortable around small birds. This experience has made him highly attuned to the emotional reactions of people around small animals, enabling him to help others become more accustomed to interacting with them.

Joanne and Clifford are also very good at picking names for their flurry animals: their two roosters are called Kronos and Midas, the rescue duck is called Paddles and one of the starts of the show, the sheep, is called Lamborghini. Further evidence that animals — and a good laugh — are the best recipe for happiness!

Judy spent the morning with our residents, guests, and staff, reflecting on her remarkable career as one of New Zealand’s most trusted newsreaders and sharing insights from her inspiring life after television.

A village with heart

“I’ve never had a moment’s doubt about my decision to move to Epsom Village.” Like Karen, so many of our residents are so happy with their new lifestyle that they don’t want to keep it to themselves. As a proud New Zealand family-owned village, we offer a level of care, warmth, and personal connection that big corporate operators simply can’t replicate. With only 90 residents, Epsom Village is intimate, charming, and distinctive — a place with real character and soul.
